Eco-Efficiency Performance
reduce natural resource and energy requirements, reduce waste and emissions, and maximize overall functionality by 3 Rs concept:

R1-Reduce
To lessen natural resource and energy requirements and minimize waste/emission through control of the production process to ensure maximum efficiency. For instance, SCG Chemicals has set several measures to reduce hazardous waste at its source. Raw material purchasing criteria has been set at higher quality to reduce waste during cracking resulting has also been extended to reduce waste at end of pipe by improving wastewater treatment efficiency in the reduction of hazardous waste per ton production.

R2-Reuse/Recycle
To bring back the unavoidable waste into the production process or reprocess before reuse. For instance, SCG Chemicals reuse cooling water to its maximum capacity. Moreover, cooling water blowdown is retreated by RO (Reverse Osmosis) to reuse in process.

R3-Replenish
is a proactive approach to prevent the seriously adverse impact to the environment.The approach seeks alternatives that do not generate waste. Avoid unnecessary use of resources especially hazardous chemicals, and search for the use of wastes as alternative raw materials. At the same time, to keep up with changes, the company conduction to develop new formula, machinery and production process.
Energy Efficiency

SCG business is a fuel – intensive industry by nature. For sustainable energy consumption, SCG Energy Committee is appointed to study and develop energy consumption guidelines for each business, including alternative fuels usage, energy-saving investment, alternative fuels procurement, and also to communicate and promote the awareness of sufficient energy consumption. The followings are projects on energy conservation and reduction implemented in 2006. SCG Chemicals: Rayong Olefins Co., Ltd. Reduced the energy use in turbine of propylene refrigeration compressor by addling Medium Pressure Ethylene System, thus lowering the excessive pressure in the pipelines, resulting in 8 percent reduction of energy consumption. In the production process of Purified Terephthalic Acid (PTA) of Siam Mitsui PTA Co., Ltd., the electrical ventilation tan is used to reduce the temperature of cooling water. The company installed an inventor to a motor of electric fan,, enabling the adjustment of air volume in line with the changing air temperature, the required temperature of cooling water is used as the control point, thus saving the energy consumption by 1, 2 percent.
Water

For sustainable water consumption, SCG CHEMICALS pay attention to use water with maximum efficiency by using 3Rs concept especially Reduce and Reuse/recycle
Waste

Industry, in certain circumstances, unavoidably generates some waste from production processes, impaired raw materials, poor quality products, contaminated containers, and residuals. This industrial waste does not only contaminate the environment, but also reflect the inefficient consumption of natural resources. The result is the increasing costs of raw materials purchased and waste elimination. SCG CHEMICALS has set Its target to achieve “Zero Waste” which is to minimize waste at source, mitigate environmental burden, avoid disposal of waste by landfill, and carry out waste within SCG as much as possible in accordance to 3R concept.
Climate Change

Over the past few years, Thailand and many countries all over the world, have experienced tremendous natural disasters due to climate change, resulting from the accumulation of greenhouse gases (GHGs) SCG recognizes a significant impact of this problem, Capac ally GHGs which is released into the environment from fuel combustion by the industrial sector. SCG CHEMICALS pledges iIts strong commitments to reduce the impact of these gases and includes in its policy on reducing the environmental impact to be implemented by the businesses. The following improvement plans are specified:
  • Study and clarify the sources and causes of GHGs emitted from various activities of each business.
  • Study and make a calculation on GHGs emit from each business based on the Intergovemmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) standards.
  • Analyze and prioritize the sources and find ways to reduce the emissions of GHGs.
  • Set a clear target for the reduction of GHGs emissions and time frame.
From 2005, SCG CHEMICALS has started to calculate and report the amount of GHGs emitted under scope 1 or direct GHGs emission. The result showed that the emissions of GHGs constantly declined in 2006. For continual improvement, SCG Chemicals report the amount of GHGs emitted, both scope 1 and scope 2. And in 2008, SCG Chemicals will go through the verification process on data and plans and report the reduction of GHGs


Green Procurement / Purchasing

SCG is the first Thai company in the country to announce a policy on Green Procurement and put the policy into action by establishing the Guidelines for Green Procurement since 2004. SCG does not only show a strong intention to purchase products and services with lese environmental to impacts, but also urge the manufacturers to develop more environmentally-friendly products and service. At present, SCG has established Green Procurement List of Environmental Products and Service comprises 108 lists from 32 brands with the total purchase of Baht 22 mill-on in 2006. Having recognized the significance of environmental management throughout the supply chain, in 2007, SCG Sustainable development committing agrees to merge Greening the Supply Chain Project with SCG Green Procurement to help suppliers who failed to meat the criteria for SCG Green Procurement in making improvement and correction and continuously enhance environmental conditions.
